According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, de Moraes’ “political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil’s shores to target Americans.” For Israel, this raises a concerning question: If judges in Brazil can be sanctioned for what Washington deems political interference, who’s to say it can’t happen here? Donald Trump, after all, has already implicitly threatened Israel’s judiciary over Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial, and last week, Ambassador Mike Huckabee jumped on the bandwagon.
