What began as a Brazilian-American clash is starting to feel uncomfortably relevant to Jerusalem.

On Friday, the State Department revoked the visas for several top Brazilian judicial officials, including Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and his family members.

The reason? According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, de Moraes’ “political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil’s shores to target Americans.”

For Israel, this raises a concerning question: If judges in Brazil can be sanctioned for what Washington deems political interference, who’s to say it can’t happen here? Donald Trump, after all, has already implicitly threatened Israel’s judiciary over Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial, and last week, Ambassador Mike Huckabee jumped on the bandwagon.

Yes, Brazil and Israel have vastly different relationships with the U.S., but if Washington is indeed embarking down this path, it could have drastic ramifications for the U.S.-Israel relationship going forward.
