Spent a weekend in Tungarli, near Lonavala. Even a decade ago, it was a small, sleepy village near Lonavala. Monsoon tourism was a thing even back then, but this complete and utter disregard for public hygiene and cleanliness is a new thing. Even on smaller hills near the area, there are now beer bottle shards, empty chips packets and plastic bottles everywhere. Roadside is littered with used diapers, plastic and even used sanitary pads. Every weekend people from Mumbai and Pune descend on Lonavala/Khandala in droves and just leave their garbage behind. These are urban upper middle class people mind you, who rent out villas for the weekend in drive in their fancy cars. What we have gained in wealth and disposable income, we have lost in civic sense. Even driving to any tourist point is a nightmare, with people trying to cut lanes on narrow village roads. It is not the locals who are doing this, it is the ugly Indian tourist, who has complete and utter disregard for both the very natural beauty he has come to seek and other fellow travellers.
