Even Strauss expert #ChristianThielemann can't change that, although he and the ensemble at least ensure beautiful word articulation in its brisk parlando style. The staging doesn't really come together until the end either. #JanPhilippGloger sets the action in a realistic Berlin flat alongside info bits about loneliness in old age and housing shortages among the young, but it's not played that way. Sir Morosus's desire for peace could be taken more seriously in a noise-polluted world, his nephew's usurping methods shown as rather questionable, especially the cartoon image of the female chatterbox. But Gloger wants and gets his happy end, as Morosus suddenly learns to laugh at the narrow-mindedness of his ideas of happiness. Before that, there's a lot of silliness and little genuine authenticity.
