My countertop microwave oven in Accra packed up yesterday while I was trying to warm food. The reality of life without a microwave oven suddenly hit me. Yes, we could live without it, but that life would be terribly inconvenient. I had to quickly get a replacement from Hisense.

Is a microwave oven a privilege or a necessity? Those from outside who have never had one will see it as a privilege because they have adapted to life without it. For my family and me, it is an absolute necessity. It is the same for many others, and that is why companies like Hisense are growing rapidly.

I bought the microwave that malfunctioned in 2019 from Game for XXX Cedis. The replacement of the same size was XXXXX Cedis, and that was a bargain because it was a Hisense 42L oven. It was also scarce, and I had to travel all the way to Baatsona to obtain one, as it was in high demand.

The World Bank states that Ghana has a higher middle-class population in absolute terms than other West African countries, and yesterday's experience confirmed this. People weren't buying the cheaper and smaller microwaves, but rather the biggest ones, as they were the best value for that price.

Ghana's middle class size stems from a simple concept that @ybenneh explained to me, and it blew my mind. They started taking the education of women seriously long before others, and it created more dual-income homes. Two incomes will lift a family out of poverty faster than one.

Each time I hear all the lamentations about Nigeria, and I see more gender wars instead of people finding more ways to be well matched and marry well, I shake my head. By the way, I have in-laws who are eligible and hardworking, and they are young women who deserve great husbands. If you're hard-working, become my friend, and maybe you'll stand a chance.
