At least around here, that is not accurate. He is a very well known athlete who is considered one of the greats because he’s won tons and tons of championships. Very similar to Santa, Schumacher, Settle, etc..

He’s not a national hero outside of the UK, so perhaps that’s where a lot of of this stems from. There’s only a handful of athletes here that are actual household names. While a few of these F1 drivers have gotten very popular as they have one multiple championships, household name is probably not accurate for any of them.

For example, most people here with zero connection probably got exposed to Vettel through a Red Bull commercial, and Hamilton through a Mercedes commercial, or Schumacher through the Disney cars movie.
