Despite all the military and financial aid from the Islamic Regime in Iran, some Hamas leaders believe that Tehran used Hamas as an expendable pawn after the October 7th attack.

They had expected Ayatollah Khamenei to order Hezbollah to launch a much larger assault in Israel from the north after October 7th.

Those who claim that Iran sacrificed Hamas argue that it was more important for Iran to sabotage the Abraham Accords by keeping Saudi Arabia out today them than it was Tehran to maintain Hamas as a significant fighting force with control over the Gaza Strip. According to this point of view, Hamas was only needed to launch the war and create a situation in which support for normalization of relations with Israel is minimized on “the Arab street,” significantly complicating Saudi Arabia’s path toward signing the Abraham Accords.
