Those who claim that Iran sacrificed Hamas argue that it was more important for Iran to sabotage the Abraham Accords by keeping Saudi Arabia out today them than it was Tehran to maintain Hamas as a significant fighting force with control over the Gaza Strip. According to this point of view, Hamas was only needed to launch the war and create a situation in which support for normalization of relations with Israel is minimized on “the Arab street,” significantly complicating Saudi Arabia’s path toward signing the Abraham Accords.
