That gave the opposition centre-backs the freedom to step up and compress the space. With Ekitike, he’ll only drop if he knows someone else is already occupying, or about to occupy, his zone. One dynamic I see working is a fullback makes an off-ball run into the half-space to pin or drag a centre-back or midfielder, that’s when Ekitike might choose to drop and link.
