The third point is what I like most about Hugo Ekitike, his ability to either occupy or arrive into the right spaces at the right time. And I think that’s going to massively impact how Liverpool progress the ball and even create chances.

This is an area where I felt Diaz struggled a bit when used as a false X. He would often drop deep to offer a passing option, but once the ball was played, his zone would be completely vacated. That gave the opposition centre-backs the freedom to step up and compress the space.

With Ekitike, he’ll only drop if he knows someone else is already occupying, or about to occupy, his zone. One dynamic I see working is a fullback makes an off-ball run into the half-space to pin or drag a centre-back or midfielder, that’s when Ekitike might choose to drop and link.
