#Update: The Puntland administration has taken a decisive step after a ship named SeaWorld, registered in the Comoros, was seized in the district of Bareeda in the Ras Caseyr region. The vessel docked at the Port of Bosaso yesterday afternoon. The regional prosecutor’s office has explicitly ordered the return of all weapons offloaded from the ship.

The vessel, currently moored at the Port of Bosaso, is still under inspection and inventory. The exact ownership of the heavy weapons on board has yet to be confirmed. Various reports suggest that the ship originated from Turkey and was en route to Mogadishu. This development has raised serious questions, especially since the responsible party has not been clearly identified.

Last night, Puntland authorities arrested the PMPF commander of the Caluula district, Jama Kampala-yare. Additionally, the Mayor of Bareeda and the Police Chief of the Ras Caseyr region were brought to Bosaso. These officials were involved in seizing the ship and its cargo and are now being questioned regarding how the arms unloading was handled.

So far, no entity has officially claimed ownership of the weapons on the vessel. However, conflicting reports indicate that the Federal Government of Somalia, the Turkish Government, and private businessmen may all have connections to this weapons shipment.

It is believed that businessmen closely tied to the central government may hold stakes in the arms cargo — a situation thought to have complicated any official response from Turkey.

This incident underscores the growing threat to national security and highlights the urgent need for a transparent and accountable system for managing the importation of weapons and military supplies into the country. While Puntland has taken a bold stance, it must provide further clarity on the future of this shipment — an issue that is critical to Somalia’s overall security.

Furthermore, if Turkey is indeed involved in this matter, it could cast a shadow over Somalia’s diplomatic relations with foreign nations. The Federal Government is also expected to issue a formal response regarding the origin and ownership of these weapons — a matter of national importance that touches on legality and rule of law in the country.
