Saudi Arabia had entered the path of reform by the time the Arab Spring broke out, with Mohammed bin Salman serving as advisor to his father, Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud.

The Muslim Brotherhood taking power in Egypt rattled the Saudis and rulers across the region. Hamas, being a Palestinian offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, became increasingly viewed as a threat to regional stability.
