We talk a lot about how dominant China is in #EV sales, but that’s all about new supply, from the likes of $BYD, $LCID, and $NIO. However, cars live 15-20 years these days, and turning over the existing fleet is a slower process. It’s the same with something like coal power, which has declined hugely as a share of the global total, and where renewables meet XX% of demand growth… And yet coal still grows in absolute terms, and could linger in the system for decades, as existing assets are only retired at end of life. Looking back to steam engines, powering factories in the 19th century, their replacement by electric motors took much longer than you’d expect (decades) as retiring operating assets is a dramatic move, which owners are typically very reluctant to make, when the replacement needs upfront capex. This is a great chart. We talk a lot about how dominant China is in #EV sales, but that’s all about new supply, from the likes of $BYD, $LCID, and $NIO.
However, cars live 15-20 years these days, and turning over the existing fleet is a slower process.
