They have had very successful starts to seasons followed by long stretches of abysmal baseball. This isn’t a common yearly issue for most of the contenders and the Yankees have also struggled in extra innings as well for multiple seasons. The Yankees have enough payroll to be “consistently competitive” over a season but anyone who watches them across multiple seasons can see similar flaws with plenty of lip service. A clear example is ignoring the poor play of IKF for an entire season (just one of many scenarios), Boone’s lip service suggesting that their internal metrics say he’s one of the best defensive shortstops in the game, and subsequently benching him when the playoffs kicked in because he was costing them games on defense. If the Yankees are selling fans on championships, the product they are selling is hard to buy into. We have the receipts.
