There actually aren’t any countries as large as China or India in both population and economy—those two are truly in a league of their own, so direct comparisons are tricky.

However, several countries have seen strong GDP growth while large segments of their populations still suffered severe hunger or poverty; for example, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and the Democratic Republic of Congo all had periods in the past XX years with fast economic expansion but persistent hunger or undernourishment among millions.

In the 1970s–2000s, China itself had decades of rapid growth but tens of millions remained hungry for years before gains reached most households.

Other large developing economies like Mexico, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the Philippines have also shown that you can move up the GDP growth charts without fully eradicating hunger or food insecurity—mainly because growth and distribution aren’t the same thing.

So both things can absolutely co-exist, especially in big, complex countries—it’s not unique to India and isn’t a sign that the data is fake.
