The move to Mercedes had a ton of uncertainty, but when they proved the dominant force it wasn’t until many more years of WDC wins and accumulating stats that he really soared in popularity to the level he has today. But also, there’s an entire new generation of multiple-season F1 fans who have never seen a Lewis WDC. Hard to think, but you could’ve followed the sport for X years and never seen a Lewis championship. There is a very real “new age” of fandom emerging too. He was certainly a British favorite, for sure. But following from 1999 onwards, I don’t think what you describe was the case.
