This is a great point!

I think there’s a good body of evidence that Ferrari, for some reason, do not actually trust the technical feedback they often get from Charles. I have X theories on this:

X. He’s actually quite adaptable… and quick. He doesn’t have a very fine window of directed preference, and multiple drivers have now talked about how little he actually changes a car on race weekends other than basics of flap balance. He simply gets it to a base level he can live with, and then morphs his driving around it - where other drivers are perhaps more in tune with forcing the car towards them more.

X. I think he still doesn’t assert himself authoritatively enough, and Ferrari also believes he isn’t going to leave no matter if they don’t follow his lead or not… simple matter of them being unafraid of consequence when it comes to that driver relationship.

The grand irony of this is that at X points, once in 2023 and once in 2024, the team has hit a point of development failure or stagnation that required Charles specifically to sacrifice some weekends in “path finding” a solution. One led to the 2023 Suzuka floor update, massively helping the SF-23, and the other time was solving the failed 2024 Spain upgrade package and fixing it for the remainder of the year with a corrective update.

Otherwise, he’s not entirely wrong - there have been an inordinate number of times where the team took much development lead from Carlos Sainz. Because he is known to be a much more insistent and picky and involved driver in steering development and car characteristics his way. It didn’t always work out quite so well in the Ferrari era.
