For starters, Israel has repeatedly claimed they don't have segregated military units by ethnicity, and I find it impossible to believe that the IDF has multiple battalions (e.g. brigade) of pure Druze "special forces." Had Israel not interfered in the affairs of a sovereign nation, whose government has made repeated peace overtures since December 2024, and hasn't launched a single attack on Israel since Assad was overthrown, the situation wouldn't be anywhere near as bad as it is now. Israel told Syrian forces to withdraw. So they did. Shocker, the security situation got worse, and BOTH SIDES are committing attrocities in a place where the Syrian government was told to get out. I am completely convinced that PM Netanyahu needs perpetual war to stop his corruption trial over and over and over again. Israel has a right to protect itself. Not only is there no legitimate threat from Syria, Hezbollah folded in large part because Syria cut their supply lines and pushed out the Iranian militias. ISIS has a very limited presence in Syria in the northeast, where the US and SDF have been conducting aggressive, localized counterterrorism campaigns since spring 2024. ISIS has had no presence in southwestern Syria for years. ISIS never controlled the southwest, even in 2015, at the height of the caliphate. Israel didn't have any f's to give when Assad, backed by Russia, was killing hundreds of thousands, including the Druze, during the Syrian Civil War. There was a historic opportunity to bring Syria to the peace table for the first time since 1948, and credible reports of Damascus ready to join the Abraham Accords, and even honoring the 1974 UN border just X weeks ago. Instead, Israel inserted itself not into a fight based on ethnic or religious grounds, but a blood feud over local politics and the drug trade. And who benefits from the chaos? Not Israel. But Iran and Russia do. But maybe that's the point. If Hezbollah can get arms flowing through Syria again, Netanyahu has his forever enemy.
