I don’t think Verstappen is bigger than Red Bull, anymore than Lewis was bigger than Mercedes or Ferrari. These are COLOSSAL brands and teams that have experienced great legacy and success prior to the arrival of these drivers mentioned, who will continue to experience great successes afterwards as well.

The point of the discussion is that there ARE people who believe that their specific driver is bigger than team or sport, and it’s all simply based on their own fandoms. And Alonso’s fandom is right in there in believing the same thing about him, too.

These people mentioned all have massive cultural appeal and influence way beyond the scope of F1, and some of them lean way way more into the celebrity world than others do.

But one thing that is common to them all? The teams like Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari were all there before them and will all be there after them.

Superstars come in ebbs and flows in seasons, and then there’s a “next” after they’re gone. Does that make them “bigger” or “transcendent”?

I mean, if you want to say so then I won’t stop you. But it feels weird to describe a temporary personality as “bigger” than the thing that made it popular and will continue growing and going long after them.
