The OBBB doesn’t end federal taxes on Social Security benefits—it adds a $6K-$12K deduction for seniors, which reduces taxable income but doesn’t eliminate taxation. The Seniors in the Workforce Tax Relief Act (H.R. 559) phases out deductions for single filers over $100K AGI and joint filers over $200K, meaning many middle-class seniors still pay taxes if their combined income exceeds thresholds.

For example, a single senior with $24K Social Security + $36K other income avoids taxes, but someone with $50K AGI + benefits could still owe. The deduction sunsets in 2029, making this a temporary band-aid, not permanent relief.

Real reform would scrap the outdated tax on earned benefits entirely.
