Most blockchains rely on pre-built databases such as LevelDB or RocksDB, which may be unpredictable. Your data, most of the time, can come from fast RAM and at other times from slow disk. The difference in speed can be up to 1000x, which makes it very difficult to set fair gas fees and keep performance consistent. IceDB is the solution to that problem. It gives you the certainty that performance is deterministic — which means that every read or write is done in the same way on all nodes. Each task reports exactly how much system load it caused, so users pay only for the real resources they used. Moreover, it features a read/write cache that is very fast and can perform both types of operations smoothly and at a rate of 15–100 nanoseconds. Besides, IceDB does not rely on conventional Merkle trees to take snapshots of the states (which can make the process slower) but instead, it goes straight to its own internal structure to make snapshots faster, without the extra overhead.
