Flavored Vapes Trigger Reward Centers Even Without Nicotine

Even nicotine-free e-cigarettes may carry risks, according to a new study on flavored vapor. 

Researchers found that popular flavors like vanilla and cherry can activate the brain’s reward pathways and reinforce vaping behavior in adolescent mice. 

Vanilla alone triggered significant reward-seeking even without nicotine, suggesting flavors can independently influence addiction-related circuits. 

The study also showed that flavors alter nicotinic receptor function in ways similar to nicotine. 

These findings raise concerns about the appeal and potential harm of nicotine-free vape products marketed to teens. 

Scientists emphasize that flavors may still foster dependence-like behaviors despite lacking nicotine.
