$NAMECOIN was the first altcoin to Bitcoin, created before Litecoin and all the early forks. It used the same SHA-256 mining algorithm as BTC and paved the way for every altcoin that followed. Coins like Ixcoin, Iocoin, Solidcoin, and Tenebrix came after — all of them are now dead. Namecoin was the original, the first experiment in decentralized naming and identity built on Bitcoin's core code.
