Making good choices during early career stage also helps. My husband and I both worked and lived in moderate to high cost areas. Started out making around $65k TOGETHER. Maxed IRAs and put extra into 401k, probably saving around $25k/yr. No fancy cars or exotic travel when our peers were living large. Now I get to be a SAHM. Hubby does pretty good but just avg for our area. Drive an old car. But the savings we built XX yrs ago continues to grow so we should be ok long term even if I dont go back to work full time.
