We can do an action now (plant a seed) but that seed (action) won't sprout and grow straight away, and it might not even produce a fruit (a reaction) until a future life. So a person who is doing bad actions (bad karma) now, might be experiencing the good reactions to good actions they've done earlier, including in previous lives, but eventually they will also have to undergo the bad reactions to the bad actions they're doing now. Conversely, a person might be doing good actions (good karma) now, yet they're presently experiencing bad reactions to bad actions they've done previously, but eventually they will also experience the good reactions to the good actions they're doing now. And of course, to accomodate "you reap what you sow", you have to accept that death is not the end, and that the one who reaps continues to exist after the death of the body, and it carries on sowing and reaping, life after life. The whole point of life though, is to understand what actions are to be performed, what actions are to be avoided, and what actions will lead to ultimately becoming free from this binding law of Karma (action and reaction).
