Cstesiphon, ancient capital of Persia.

It was invaded by the Arabs in 637, its citizens massacred, its women raped, and its heritage destroyed.

The city never recovered. 

Today, these collapsing ruins in modern day Iraq are what remains of Iran's pre-islamic glory days.
