I share those concerns. But what is happening to us right now, both in public policy and in culture, is completely out of proportion to any legitimate debate. The volume of hate and bigotry directed at trans women today is the worst I have ever seen. This is no longer about children. It is about eliminating transsexuals. That is not hyperbole. Trump has removed us as a legal category. That means we can now be freely discriminated against at work, in housing, and in public life. We have lost civil rights protections. Trans healthcare is being criminalized for adults. There are open calls to eliminate us from society entirely, to end our healthcare and our legal status. These calls are not coming from trolls. They are coming from respected figures inside well-funded right-wing think tanks. And I think many otherwise smart people are choosing not to see what their movement has become. They focus on narrow policy disagreements while ignoring the broader pattern. They convince themselves that dehumanizing us is some kind of moral clarity, and that they are the victims when we push back. I say this without drama. I do not know if trans people have a future in America. Much of this crisis is self-inflicted. That does not change the fact that we are facing a historic wave of hatred. No mistake trans activists have made, and there are many, justifies this political project. This is taking a serious psychological toll on me. I know myself well enough to recognize when I need to step back. So I am taking a break from trans issues for now. I am also stepping away from Twitter to give myself time to recover. I will come back clearer and more focused. If you need to reach me, feel free to email.
