Researchers found CanUD shares strong genetic links with depression, PTSD, ADHD, and schizophrenia, with evidence of bidirectional causal relationships. Unlike casual cannabis use, CanUD showed a much stronger and more consistent overlap with psychiatric risk factors. Genetic regions and pathways shared by CanUD and psychiatric disorders were identified, including variants implicated in inflammation and neurodevelopment. Mendelian randomization confirmed that CanUD both increases and is increased by several psychiatric disorders. These findings underscore the potential mental health risks of heavy cannabis use as legalization and access expand globally.
