Organised labour in Ogun State has resolved to continue its indefinite strike, rejecting Governor Dapo Abiodun’s plea and proposals over the state’s controversial Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The strike, which began on Monday, July 14, 2025, will continue indefinitely after Friday’s emergency meeting between labour leaders and the state government ended in another deadlock.

At the heart of the dispute is the demand by labour unions for the outright cancellation of the CPS or a postponement of its implementation until 2042, in line with recommendations from the Adekunle Hassan-led Committee.

In a fresh letter dated Friday, July 18, 2025, signed by the Ogun State chairmen and secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), and XX affiliated unions, labour insisted that their original position submitted to the government on July XX remains unchanged.

“The prayer of the entirety of the State and Local Government Civil/Public Servants is the outright cancellation of the dysfunctional Contributory Pension Scheme, or its commencement date be shifted to 2042,” the statement read.

Workers have also cited other grievances including the non-remittance of pension contributions, non-implementation of the new minimum wage and its consequential adjustments, non-payment of leave allowance arrears, non-adjustment of pensions, and the non-release of staff promotions for 2023 and 2024.
