Certain Balkan groups seem to share this idea with Koreans, who believe you can die if you leave a ceiling fan on in the room you sleep in. I lived in a house with no A/C with a Bulgarian roommate when I was younger, and when it got into the 90s (F) in the house I got so sick of it I ordered a huge whole house window fan with enough static pressure to create a breeze in every room. This horrified him, and he said it would activate a condition he called "plexiedes" (not sure of the spelling) that sounded like some kind of general whole body inflammation. He was so distraught by this I got rid of the fan and settled for the meager natural breeze you'd get from open windows. He then proceeded to start grilling sausages every single day on the balcony directly outside my bedroom window, filling it with smoke. He was obsessed with Nietzsche and Don Quixote.
