Could your diabetes medication protect your brain from Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and dementia? A just-published study in JAMA Network Open by Lin and colleagues adds serious weight to the idea that drugs like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) may do more than lower blood sugar and trim your waistline. Could they shield your brain and blood vessels from long-term damage?
Key Points:
- The authors showed that there was a lower dementia risk w/ GLP-1 drugs.
- Semaglutide and tirzepatide were associated w/ a XX% reduced risk of dementia in type X diabetes and in those w/ obesity.
- The authors showed there were also fewer strokes.
- Stroke risk was decreased by XX% when compared to other diabetes medications.
- How about all cause mortality? It was XX% lower among users.
My take: We need to prevent disease, and therefore I find this data in this study to be important. Here are the points that resonated w/ me. 1- Semaglutide and tirzepatide may protect your brain. 2- Dementia defense should start early. 3- Stroke prevention is critical. 4- It’s not just about blood sugar. What if these medications influence brain inflammation, amyloid and blood vessel health? 5- Talk to your doctor. If you are on a diabetes medication and proactively concerned about brain health, GLP-1 receptor agonists may be an option.
