The 19-year old, who I’m told stood out in last weekend’s 4-0 friendly win against Carlisle at Benton, is the only outfield Under-21 player who trained regularly as part of first-team sessions out in Austria. Talented right-back Leo Shahar joined the group on occasion, but Hernes - who spent the second half of last season on loan at Danish club Aalborg - is now seemingly viewed as the U21 player closest to Howe’s first team plans. Understand the club see Hernes as a number six, a position he thrived in during that aforementioned loan spell - which was no surprise given his defensive-midfield suited profile. He may even be involved at Celtic Park this afternoon. The entire U21 squad were based at a nearby campus in Innsbruck, preparing for a busy campaign of their own while waiting for a new head coach to be appointed in place of the recently departed Irishman Diarmuid O’Carroll.
