Teqnion, the Swedish serial acquirer focused on industrial niche companies, has faced some challenging situations since Q2 2024. CEO and founder Johan Steene made several underperforming acquisitions (particularly in wooden house construction) prior to Daniel Zhang joining the company. These missteps, combined with weak performance in parts of the construction sec tor, contributed to a ~40% share price decline over the past year. Thereās written plenty of articles about what went wrong and investors view on it, but for us, the two key takeaways are: 1) Teqnionās management (Daniel Zhang and Johan Steene) addressed the problem and have taken measures in place for a more robust future organization. Initiatives are the so called āCEO-coachesā, that help CEOās run their companies, and country managers in the U.K. and Sweden. 2) Although there are still problems with the acquisition of the past, as the company grows, these āproblem companiesā represent a smaller and smaller piece of the portfolio. Acquisition activity remains strong this year, with seven deals completed year-to-date, including three in Q2. Most of the acquired companies in Q2 are based in the UK and appear to have higher margins and more robust business models than the average company in Teqnionās portfolio.
