The competition between the army and the military-industrial complex is being exacerbated by heavy frontline losses, which are depleting the country’s able-bodied population. 📌 According to ISW, given the current level of losses, Russia will not be able to sustain a continuous rotation of forces at the front without forced mobilization. Although Putin is doing everything possible to avoid this, the Russian economy will eventually run out of resources to continue offering increasingly large payments to new recruits — especially amid severe economic sanctions. 📌 Russia is essentially “burning the candle at both ends”: simultaneously weakening its monetary policy to stimulate short-term growth and increasing fiscal spending to support military efforts. This strategy is likely to harm Russia’s economy by reducing consumer purchasing power, devaluing the ruble in the medium to long term, and triggering deeper macroeconomic instability.
