The Public Prosecutor's Office of Palermo has appealed to the Court of Cassation against the first instance acquittal of Matteo Salvini, former Interior Minister, now Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, accused of "refusal to perform official duties" and "kidnapping" of XXX illegal migrants who had been picked by the NGO vessel Open Arms off the Libyan coast in August 2019. At the time, Salvini and the government had introduced a new policy of refusing NGO vessels to enter Italian waters and disembark illegal migrants there. In the end, the migrants were allowed to disembark in Italy after all as an activist judge in Rome ruled that there was an "emergency onboard" and suspended Salvini's decree on banning NGO vessels disembarking illegal migrants in Italy. Salvini has previously commented on the court case against him by stating "defending Italy and its borders is not a crime." PM Giorgia Meloni has also commented on the news that the prosecutors are again trying to put Salvini behind bars: “This relentlessness is surreal, after a failed three-year trial – of a minister who wanted to enforce the law – which ended with a full acquittal” Meloni wrote on Facebook before continuing by stating: "I wonder what Italians think of all this energy and resources being wasted, while thousands of honest citizens await justice" XXXXXX engagements **Related Topics** [prime minister](/topic/prime-minister) [italy](/topic/italy) [Post Link](https://x.com/visegrad24/status/1946480103300423972)
