A Fragile Truce, an Unstable Core

A few quiet messages this morning - from friends of mine in diplomatic and foreign service circles across the region, and one from Europe. Veterans of this game. All pointed in the same direction: the crisis in Suwayda, in its current form, began with Hikmat al-Hijri.

His intransigence over the past seven months, the constant shifting of demands, the refusal to compromise - they all agree he bears the overwhelming share of responsibility.

One told me their foreign minister believes al-Hijri may be mentally unstable. Reports say even his own negotiators are frustrated, apologizing to regional actors like Jordan, blaming his erratic behavior on “old age.” But few are convinced.

The problem is structural. He’s not a politician. He’s a hereditary religious figure, and his followers are bound to him. That makes yesterday’s ceasefire - brokered through the intervention of His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan and President Trump - a welcome but fragile development.

Privately, many fear it rests on the thinnest of ice. A truce balanced atop a man increasingly seen as mentally unfit, yet untouchable.

And perhaps the only way this ceasefire holds is if he simply boards the helicopter - and disappears quietly into exile, somewhere far from the fire he helped ignite.
