In Manhattan, it's a wasteland of ego and performance. You approach these girls, and it’s like they’ve had their souls replaced with Instagram filters. They avoid eye contact, pretend you’re invisible, and act completely disinterested, not because they’re shy, but because they’ve convinced themselves that any display of warmth is giving a man too much. Or worse, they actually engage you. They smile, they flirt a bit… and then, right when there’s a flicker of chemistry, they drop the line 'Oh, my boyfriend would find that funny,' or 'My husband would kill me.' It’s a script and half the time, the BF/husband doesn’t even exist. Then they act shocked when you don’t play along. When you don’t want to continue the dance. When you step back and treat it for what it is: a game with no payoff.
