Some folks remember when California used to attract family businesses. That’s not the story anymore.

XX years. And just like that, In-n-Out is gone. Moved east. Quietly.

Makes you wonder what really shifted. Taxes? Culture? Or maybe—compliance strings nobody wants to talk about?

A guy I met near Costa Mesa once said: “Certain franchises started getting visits. Not inspections. Conversations.” Then he stopped talking.

That was in ‘21. Around the same time ESG scoring started bleeding into zoning regs.

Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe it’s just growth.

But when legacy brands walk away from their roots… that’s not just economics.

What’s pushing them out so fast? And why’s no one digging deeper?
