Jeff Gordon dominated & was leading Darlington, the penultimate race before the championship, with around XX to go before Ryan Newman blew an engine & brought out a caution 

Gordon’s crew gave him a 16-second pit stop, and Gordon went from the lead to 7th. He got back to 3rd and Jimmie Johnson went on to win. Gordon went on to finish 3rd at Homestead & 3rd in the championship, losing by XX points

I think Jeff Gordon wins the 2004 title if not for that caution or that horrific pitstop. It is incredibly forgotten, & the only time in my life I can recall one horrific pitstop single-handedly costing a driver the Cup championship
