These newly obtained emails indicate that, in response to a letter from the National School Boards Association that characterized concerned parents as domestic terrorists, the White House and DOJ scrambled over a weekend in October 2021 to come up with a justification to investigate parents. Although career attorneys warned there was no legal basis for federal involvement and that parental speech was protected under the First Amendment, Attorney General Merrick Garland issued his memo just days later.

Appalling that they tried to chill citizens’ rights to free speech and to participate in the political process. This is what a threat to democracy looks like.
