Approximately XX million registered GME shares “owned” by retail investors are held by Dingo & Co. and Cede & Co. that investors may believe are held self custody.  If GME terminated the plan, it would move those XX million shares out of custody and directly into investors names (with no intermediary).  Right now those XX million shares are not protected by SIPC yet they may be at risk of custodian counterparty risks.
