The Druze of Syria want to stay armed, not like Hezbollah, but like the Druze of Lebanon, that is, maintain autonomy at local administration level. This is a classic Druze behavior since ancient times. The Druze are loyal citizens to all the states that they are citizens of. What I find interesting is that Sharaa cannot disarm a single Turkish militia (which is much heavily armed than the Druze), or the Kurds, but is unrelenting in going after the weakest bunch, the Druze. Now imagine you're a Syrian and an armed Chechen of Sharaa's army tells you what to do. I was the first advocate of Sharaa and took a lot of heat for calling on the world to give him a chance. The world did. He did not build anything that looked like a state. He runs the country like running a militia. The way he is handling the conflict with the Druze (all these clans calling for jihad) makes the case for why the Druze, and Hezbollah, better keep their arms. No one wants to join a state in the image of these clans and militias like the one that Sharaa is offering.
