The mistake was not pressing into Soviet territory as soon as we crushed Germany - and in my opinion some allied generals were prepared to do that. I don’t think we let the Red Army capture Berlin to avoid taking unnecessary casualties. I think we let them do it because they might take heavy enough losses for us to defeat them ourselves.
