If you never enroll in the plan and never buy through the Computershare platform, your shares are self custody.  The “problem” for a company like Alphabet, however, is that they pay dividends and when an investor signs up for dividend reinvestment, that removes the shares out of self custody.  Going forward (August 1st) investors will buy from their brokers, initiate a DRS transfer, and all shares will be held self custody.
