If a document is at the center of an investigation, my training is to share the document with the subject of the story in advance of publication or provide detailed information so the subject can identify the document.

This gives the subject of your report a full opportunity to respond and may reveal additional information about the document that requires further due diligence by your reporting team. 

I have had at least one situation where I provided a document in advance to a government agency, with the condition it not be shared, and it then showed up in another news outlet.  

It was unfortunate, but I saw it, as the cost of doing transparent reporting.
