Madiba once said, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." The modern world requires Mandela's courage to address the current acute challenges. The international community needs to be as resolute in defending our shared ideals, norms of international law, and principles of humanity. I paid tribute to Nelson Mandela during my visit to South Africa last year. We also unveiled a memorial plaque in Freedom Park honoring Hennadii Udovenko, the founding father of Ukrainian diplomacy. As co-chair of the UN's Special Committee against Apartheid, he played an important role in the fight for justice and freedom. From that time until now, we see the fight for freedom as a shared value. On Mandela Day, Ukraine joins South Africa and the rest of the world in honoring Nelson Mandela's legacy of justice, dignity, and unity.
