Fastball generates above average spin rates ranging from 2400-2600 RPM’s, anything above 2400 with his current velocity is considered above average at the MLB level. Kussow’s FB velocity has see incremental gains throughout his PREP career. Incremental Velo gains, plus arm strength, plus projection indicate there is considerably more velocity on the way Future incremental gains in spin rates & expected velo bumps makes this pitch a potential XX grade fastball like Tong’s. Kussow’s best pitch is his slider, which was widely considered among of the best in the prep ranks, offering late two-plane break, ranging from 79-88 MPH, & having plus command. Kussow’s command, ability to manipulate the pitch’s velocity, & plus spin rates, makes this another potential XX grade pitch in the future, it resembles McLean’s but just a wee bit loopier. Spin rates for his slider are already above average, ranging from 2500-2700 RPMs, again, that’s not above average for PREP pitchers, that’s above average for MLB pitchers. Kussow hails from Wisconsin, best known for producing cold-weather, #Packers’ fans & NHL prospects. It’s no secret teams heavily favor pitchers from the “Big 4” (California, Texas, Florida, & Georgia). Every time a prospect like Brock Porter breaks through the stigma placed on cold weather PREPS, gets a huge bonus, & then stumbles, it seemingly gives teams PTSD & forces many of them to revert back to being overly standoffish of these prospects in future drafts. Had Kussow grown up in California or Texas, he’d have been a Top XX selection, if not higher, & a lock to be a Top XX pick had he declared after a couple years of college ball.
