#KENYA: ACTIVISTS MWANGI & ATUHAIRE SUE TANZANIA, KENYA, UGANDA OVER RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire, alongside seven regional civil society organizations, have filed a landmark case at the East African Court of Justice against the governments of Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, as well as the Secretary General of the East African Community.
The petition stems from their abduction, torture, sexual violence, and unlawful deportation while in Tanzania in May 2025 to observe the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

According to the statement released today, the two were seized from their hotel in Dar es Salaam, held incommunicado, and later dumped across the border, Mwangi into Kenya and Atuhaire into Uganda.

The applicants accuse Tanzania of orchestrating the violations, and fault Kenya and Uganda for failing to protect their nationals despite widespread media coverage. They also cite the EAC Secretary General’s silence as a breach of duty.

The petition seeks public apologies, USD X million compensation each, psychosocial support, and institutional reforms, including a regional summit to address governance and human rights. Mwangi declared, “We are going to court not only to fight for justice but to show the whole world what happened to us in the dark.”

The case is being hailed as a test of East Africa’s commitment to human dignity, regional solidarity, and the rule of law.
