Burkina Faso Dissolves Electoral Commission

On July 16, 2025, President Ibrahim Traoré’s military junta dissolved the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), calling it a costly tool of foreign influence. 

Minister Emile Zerbo announced that electoral duties will now fall under the Ministry of Territorial Administration, citing CENI’s $XXXXXXX annual cost and susceptibility to external manipulation. 

The move comes as the junta, in power since a 2022 coup, postponed elections to 2029, allowing Traoré to remain in office and potentially run in future polls. 

Critics warn the dissolution undermines democratic processes, while the junta frames it as a step toward sovereignty amid growing ties with Russia and a pivot away from French influence.
