If you think that is how you will be able to get elected and keep enough of a support base to actually get your policies through instead of severing and isolating yourself from that movement and from the broader public who will now see you as an opportunist liar who will bend to deranged smears and throw his own base under the bus rather than sticking to his genuinely held beliefs and the truth, and thereby losing the only source of your mandate and power, then go ahead and keep spitting in their face and see how that turns out for you.
