What was said during this interview hasn’t received enough attention.

For me, it’s not just that John Sawers suggested Israel was “ambivalent” when it came to Assad. It wasn’t because he stated that Israel was deliberately trying to rip Syria apart, or that Israel doesn’t care about the Druze. It’s not that he described the Druze as “Muslim,” or any of the other outlandish and conspiratorial things he said in speaking with @amanpour.

It’s that he showed — once again — that so often the most educated and “successful” really have no fucking clue what they’re talking about.

Here’s a guy who attended elite prep schools, the University of St. Andrews, Harvard, and Nottingham before going on to a distinguished career in the UK government, eventually leading MI6 for half a decade. Yet he doesn't understand the most basic things about people in parts of the world where his policies have changed generations of lives.

And we wonder why our leaders repeatedly make horrendous geopolitical decisions, how institutional antisemitism and stupidity are so severe, and why common sense at the highest levels seems to be increasingly scarce.

It’s because of people like this, and organizations like CNN, who keep telling them directly and indirectly, “you’re an expert — explain to these people what they can’t possibly understand.”

The thing is — we usually do understand — until, of course, people like this pipe up. I don't know about you, but I've had quite enough.
