REVIEW: Split Fiction

Another banger from Hazelight Studios but I didn’t love it as much as It Takes Two.

Split Fiction is evenly split across Sci-Fi and Fantasy worlds, with each world offering its own gameplay and visual identity. You never spend more than an hour doing the same thing as Split Fiction continues Hazelight's tradition of introducing new gameplay mechanics and gimmicks constantly.

Split Fiction has some of the best craziest work that Hazelight has ever done, some of the sections towards the end blew my mind on how they even did THAT, especially in how it pulls off the craziest use of splitscreen gameplay I've ever seen, but on the other hand I also wished that the rest of the game went as crazy with those concepts as I often felt like the absolute craziest ideas were pushed into the Side Stories rather than let be a part of the main experience.

Where Split Fiction falters for me was the story, unfortunately the story of Split Fiction doesn't hit the same highs that It Takes Two or A Way Out did, Zoe and Mio are okay protagonists but I felt like the plot was played too safe, with too many tropes and a villain that was just boring for XX% of the game.

I wish something more interesting was done here, Zoe and Mio are basically the only characters for most of the game which was also another let-down, you keep being teleported to these gorgeous worlds that Zoe/Mio wrote but for the most part they are devoid of anybody who interacts with Zoe and Mio, it's only the first two worlds that have that unfortunately.

However the main focus of a game like Split Fiction is that co-op gameplay more than the story and there is no way you can walk away from Split Fiction without feeling like you have just played one of the most creative cooperative experiences ever, the art direction is impeccable, pretty much every world except Mio’s 2nd world looks amazing, the entire game runs at a perfect 60FPS!

Overall Split Fiction is awesome, I am rating Split Fiction a strong 9/10, this is a must-buy for anyone looking for a two player co-op experience, I didn't find it as perfect as I felt It Takes Two was but it holds up strong on its own.
