Wrong. If people identifying with the opposite gender was just as common in the past, and just repressed, and if repressing opposite-gender identification creates an extraordinarily high risk of suicide, then youth suicide rates in the 1950s would have been through the roof.  

In the 1950s youth suicide rates were at their lowest:
